Highlights & Achievements

Delivered a robust, high-performance external envelope tailored to the clinical needs of a mental health facility—balancing durability, security, and aesthetic integration with therapeutic design principles.

Resolved complex interface details between façade elements, roof, windows, and structural systems to ensure weather-tightness, thermal performance, and compliance with Part L and infection control requirements.

Collaborated with suppliers and specialist subcontractors to ensure buildability and technical compliance with NHS guidelines and HTMs (Health Technical Memoranda).

Led the integration of structural and MEP systems within a constrained clinical environment, ensuring minimal clashes and optimal spatial efficiency across patient areas, plant spaces, and secure environments.

Developed coordinated models and detailed sections that resolved spatial conflicts and supported early procurement and accurate installation.

Led the production and delivery of COBie data drops, ensuring structured asset information for facilities management was complete, accurate, and aligned with the client’s Asset Information Requirements (AIR).

Actively contributed to the Value Management process, identifying opportunities to reduce cost and complexity while maintaining design intent, clinical functionality, and compliance with HTMs and HBNs.

Assessed material and detailing alternatives for the external fabric, proposing solutions that offered better lifecycle value without compromising safety, durability, or performance.

Medical Architecture

This new Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for children and adolescents is being delivered on an elevated, wooded site in Bournemouth, adjacent to a Grade II* listed hospital building. Designed by Medical Architecture and currently under construction by Kier, the facility provides eight inpatient beds for 12–18-year-olds requiring intensive mental health support in a secure yet therapeutic environment.

The building responds sensitively to its steeply sloping, secluded site by nestling patient accommodation into a wooded plateau, offering direct visual connections to the tree canopy. Staff and service areas occupy the lower level with access to landscaped outdoor space, enhancing operational efficiency and well-being.

A clear zoning strategy separates patient and clinical areas, with all primary functions on a single level to promote accessibility, calm circulation, and sightline clarity. A central courtyard forms the heart of the building, around which day spaces—lounge, games room, and classrooms—are arranged, all with framed woodland views.

En suite bedrooms are designed for privacy and comfort, incorporating large secure windows, window seats, and built-in furniture that balances robustness with personalisation. Materiality is carefully considered: a buff brick base and standing seam zinc roof reference the adjacent heritage buildings, while rooflines are articulated to minimise visual impact from the listed structure.

As one of the early projects within the UK’s New Hospital Programme, the design contributes to forward-thinking standards in mental health infrastructure—prioritising dignity, safety, and proximity to family support networks.
