This strategic masterplan for Royal Brompton Hospital reimagines the Chelsea campus as a modern, consolidated healthcare facility within its historic urban context. The proposal restructures clinical services around a new central hospital building while funding construction through the phased redevelopment and sale of peripheral sites.
The design carefully integrates contemporary healthcare infrastructure with the character of the Chelsea Conservation Area. Key heritage elements—including the historic vestry—are retained, while a new public square enhances permeability and civic engagement.
The scheme includes residential components along Sydney Street, with sensitively scaled terraces and apartment blocks that respond to the surrounding streetscape. A major design challenge was ensuring the massing of the new hospital building, positioned behind the existing 1970s structure, complemented nearby landmarks such as St. Luke’s Church and Dovehouse Street.
Extensive community consultation shaped the proposals, with the establishment of a liaison group and public exhibitions ensuring transparency and local input. The masterplan balances medical innovation, urban regeneration, and conservation, creating a holistic vision for the hospital’s future.
